Evanston, Illinois, has established the nation's first government-funded reparations program for African Americans. City officials see the initiative as a beginning point for correcting decades of housing discrimination. However, the initiative has so far failed to deliver on its promises, with only 16 of the hundreds of Black people who applied receiving funds and hundreds more on a waiting list. Reparations for African-Americans are a contentious issue, with many white people and Republicans opposed to the notion. Despite this, the campaign is gaining traction in several liberal areas, with California, Illinois, New York, and New Jersey all exploring reparations for their residents.
